Description of Invention
Malaysia has recently implemented the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in English education, including CEFR-aligned Classroom-Based Assessment (CBA). However, a 2024 study reveals that many Malaysian ESL teachers struggle to apply CBA effectively due to insufficient training, limited understanding of the CEFR, and time constraints. Despite initiatives like the Assessment Literacy for English Language Teachers (ALEL) programme, research on teacher preparation for assessment practices is limited. This study examines the language assessment literacy (LAL) of 48 in-service Malaysian English teachers using a quantitative survey based on Fulcher’s (2012) questionnaire. Results show that 92% of teachers feel somewhat prepared to develop language tests, but there is a clear need for more professional development. These findings emphasise the need for improved teacher training to support the successful implementation of CEFR-aligned assessments in Malaysian schools.
